Madinah is also called Madinah Al-Nabi which means City of the Prophet. One of the reasons for this name is of course the presence and the story behind Masjid Al-Nabawi. The mosque is the second holiest site in the Islam because it contains the Green Dome, the chamber in which the Prophet Muhammad is buried. Masjid Al-Nabawi was established around 622 after the Prophet built the first mosque, Masjid Al-Taqwa; mosque of piety, in Quba, a village in the outskirst of Madinah. The Prophet built the second mosque; Masjid Al-Nabawi, in Madinah, adjacent to his house. The first version of the mosque was very simple, it was built out of mud bricks and the structure of the mosque was supported by palm tree trunks. Therefore this first version cannot be compared to what the mosque looks like now a days.
The small mosque, around 8660 square feet, which the Prophet had built was enlarged by many Muslim rulers. A reason for this was that the mosque continuously attracted many pilgrims from all over the world to the holy site. After the last expansion in 1992 the mosque covers 1,78 million square feet, therefore 700.000 people can pray simultaneously during for example the Hajj season. Many Muslims during their Hajj or Umrah first go to Madinah’s Mosque before continuing to Makkah.
If you go to Madinah nowaday’s the Prophet's Mosque dominates the skyline. Although it is one of the oldest mosques of the world, it doesn’t look like that because it is very modern. The mosque is filled with electrical and mechanical systems, for example retractable domes and umbrella’s. It even has one of the largest and most innovative airconditioning systems. Besides all the technical features the mosque is also a beautiful sight. It has many colorful decorations especially in the older part, there are also numerous pillars and arches of marble with golden ornaments and beautiful Persian carpets.
The prophets mosque is located in the centre of Medina, with many hotels and restaurants nearby.
