Ramadan in Madinah 2011
Saturday, 28 May 2011

Ramadan is a moment in time Muslims all over the world look forward to every year. This because it is a time of inner reflection and worshipping Allah. During this time people take extra time for family, spiritual cleansing and growth. It is always celebrated in the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. Ramadan in Madinah is even more special because celebrating this close to the Holy Mosque of the Prophet is for many Muslims a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Al Madinah Al Munawarah embraces the Holy Prophet Mosque. The heart of the Prophet Mosque is called the Rawda, a garden from the gardens of Paradise. Some of the columns of the Rawda are the sites of significant events like the repentance of Abu Lubaba, the place where the Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) would rest before 'itikaf, and the pillar of Aisha where no dua is rejected. These are marked with different colors and special markings to highlight the spot.
The Holy Mosque of the Prophet is kept in good conditions despite the huge amount of worshipers. The authorities hire many people to clean and although their job is humble it is a highly wanted and appreciated position. Once you are ready to go to the Holy Prophet Mosque to prepare for Iftar (this is the meal at the end of the fast) and as soon as you step through the gates of the Mosque, don't be surprised that many children come running from all directions attempting to invite people to break the fast with them and their families. This because it is considered as a blessing to be able to provide food for people to break their fast.
Once the month is over, preparations for Eid Al Fiter, start around 3AM after the Eid prayer worshipers walk through the streets giving sweets to the children in Madinah. Leaving this beautiful city after Eid is painful, but comfort comes that worshipers are blessed that they had the opportunity to come to visit the greatest blessing of Allah, the Holy Prophet, and will not return home empty-handed". Madinah shall always be in their heart.
