World´s Largest Skyscraper in Jeddah
Wednesday, 07 September 2011

Yes, you are reading it right. The world’s largest skyscraper will be standing here in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It will be about 1000m high and shall look over the largest country in the Middle East. It will have the highest observation deck in the world and will cost around 20 billion dollars. It will be yet another attraction to visit during your vacation in Jeddah.
About two years ago Prince Al-Waleed launched competition. He invited eight architects to design a super tall building and compete for the commission. Adrian Smith came out as the winner. He designed some of the largest buildings in the world, such as the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the Jin Mao tower in Shanghai and the former highest building of the world: Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai. And now the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, which will be at least 173 meters taller than the Burj Khalifa.
“This tower symbolizes the Kingdom as an important global business and cultural leader, and demonstrates the strength and creative vision of its people. It represents new growth and high-performance technology fused into one powerful iconic form. “ These were the words of the designer himself.
The design of the tower is inspired by a young desert plant. The way the fronds sprout upward from the ground as a single form and then start separating from each other at the top that is the idea behind the enormous tower.
"We envision Kingdom Tower as an iconic new marker of Jeddah's historic importance as the traditional gateway to the holy city of Mecca," Mr. Al Maiman, executive director said.
Each of Kingdom Tower's three sides features a series of notches create shadow that shield areas of the building from the sun and provide outdoor terraces with stunning views of Jeddah and the Red Sea.
Not scared of heights?
The building will feature a sky terrace on the 157th level, open to visitors to enjoy the amazing views. It will be the highest observation desk in the world, with parts of glass floor, so people could look down 157 floors.
Unfortunately the building will be finished in five years from now. But he, it is a good excuse to come back to Jeddah when it is ready and be standing on the highest observation deck of the world and look over the red sea and the beauty of Saudi Arabia.
