The King Saud International Seaport, also called Jeddah Islamic Seaport, is the most important port serving the holy cities Makkah and Madinah. The port has a good location because it is located on the Red Sea, in the middle of the shipping route between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. The port covers about 10,5 square kilometers which makes it one of the bigger ports. Visit the harbour during your stay in a luxury beach resort in Jeddah...
Jeddah Islamic Seaport was established in 1976, from here it started to develop and expand to the way as it is. Now a day’s Jeddah can receive the largest vessels build which many big harbors can’t receive. Given its operational capacity, Jeddah Islamic Seaport is one of the largest seaports worldwide. Last year over 3,5 million containers where handled and more that 40 million tons of bulk. One of the reasons that Jeddah Islamic Port is so important is that the seaport has a lot of modern equipments and facilities to handle the goods, therefore waiting times are minimized.
Another reason for its importance is that Jeddah Islamic Seaport is one of the few places where there is a gap in the coral reef. Parallel along the coast of Saudi Arabia are many beautiful coral reefs, Jeddah’s seaport is one of the few places where the coastline can be entered directly by large ships. To mark the natural break in the reef a lighthouse is situated at the north entrance of the harbour. This lighthouse is the tallest in the world and has an unconventional design. Due to its size, the light can be seen up to 25 miles away from the coast.
When you want to visit the harbour you can do a boat trip or simply enter or leave Saudi Arabia by one of the passenger ships that arrive and depart from Jeddah to many other destinations.
